    On a dark, dark night…

This week I want to tell you something about my book Finders Keepers, An Almost Gothic Love Affair. You know what the elements of Gothic romance are, right? The Gothic Romance genre draws its name from Gothic architecture, which was creepy at best. These medieval buildings usually sport underground passages, dark battlements, hidden panels, and trapdoors. They are dark and mysterious and scary. A Gothic romance is set in just such a place, which is often haunted. The damsel in distress is often trying to escape an overbearing father, only to be trapped in a situation at the mercy of the hero, an attractive, bad tempered, moody man. The house…

    Karma, or Kismet, or Fate

I was just wondering how you felt about karma. Or fate, or kismet, or destiny.  Any word that implies pre-destination in the sense that a person doesn’t steer his of her own ship. I mean, a coachman is relied on to get his young passenger to her destination, regardless of the weather or the time of the night. Whether or not he gets her there safely is out of her hands. She has to blindly trust him to get her where she needs to be.  Her karma, or kismet, or fate, whatever you want to call it, is in her coachman’s hands. Read a bit here to see what I mean: https://storyoriginapp.com/giveaways/cbc37928-7b17-11ea-a1aa-5f4ade61dbf4 Finders Keepers An Almost Gothic…

    Finders Keepers

An Almost Gothic Love Affair – What is better that a creepy Gothic tale laced with romance? The classical Gothic novels we have all heard of – Dracula, The mysteries of Udolpho, Rebecca, Frankenstein, and many more – all have a few elements in common.  They are mostly set in a remote castle in Eastern Europe, there is a secret, a curse, and a damsel in distress at the mercy of a dark, unethical lord of the manor, etc.. There often are vampires in the mix. I love Gothic Romance. So, I wanted to write one of my own, but I wanted to set it in South Africa, which already sets…

    I’ve Done It Again!

I’m Late Again! I don’t believe it, but I have gone and done it again! And it is all down to time management. You see, what happened was, the restaurant I worked for closed down due to the covid fallout. That means I ‘retired’ at the end of January. Not my choice, but there you have it. So far, it’s been great – I tell myself daily that I am on vacation. So, I dawdle and read a book instead of getting on with what I need to do. (I am currently reading book 2 in Autumn Archer’s Jungle Oasis trilogy. She is a wonderful author. Check out her work…

    Finders Keepers:

An Almost Gothic Love Affair If you are familiar with the Gothic genre, you will know that elements are a remote setting, normally a castle somewhere in eastern Europe, a damsel in distress, atmospherics linked to fear, supernatural or inexplicable things happening, a powerful, tyrannical male having control of the woman, omens, curses, madness, etc.. For more details on the Gothic novel, go here: https://www.invaluable.com/blog/elements-of-gothic-literature/ Finders Keepers has most of those elements, the striking difference being that the story is set in the Cape Colony on the southern tip of Africa in the year 1749.A young bride is sent off on her own with only her coachman for protection into…

    Finders Keepers

An Almost Gothic Love Affair Sometimes it takes a wrong turn to get you to the right place. A bride is sent off into the unknown to marry a stranger on All Hallows Eve, October 31, 1749. What she finds on her arrival is enough to make her skin crawl.Limping footsteps, blood-curdling screams, smoking torches, and a house on a cliff… A man she only sees in the dark, his breathing labored behind a mask.“A betrothal is as good as the wedding vows. You cannot leave.”“Am I your prisoner?” “You shall stay here until you bear me a child. Then you can stay or go, the choice shall be mine!”…
