The Male Version of ‘Pretty Woman’

Pretty Woman, the rich guy and streetwalker, as portrayed by Richard Gere and Julia, Roberts (1990), became an iconic romantic comedy.
It would seem that the ‘prostitute trope’, depicting both male and female, has held a fascination for a long time. The official definition of the word prostitute – a person who engages in sex in exchange for money. It is supposedly the oldest profession, but it is also illegal in most societies today.
In American Gigolo, Richard Gere portrays a male escort, satisfied with his job until he gets framed for the murder of his ex-client.
There will always be those who offer sex for money, though, regardless of the risks.
But Hollywood romanticized sex workers. These people are real and it is a hard life. But how are they represented in the media? The picture of a prostitute, either as a poor wretch, or as a happy hooker, is misleading. According to studies, most sex workers have widely differing lifestyles, and the reasons they do what they do vary greatly, regardless of the risks.
Just for a moment, let’s look at these risks. They include being arrested and jailed, there are the health risks in the form of sexually transmitted diseases, social stigma, physical abuse, rejection by family and friends, gay bashing in the case of male-male prostitution, the financial risks of having an insecure income and risks of the mental/emotional effects that come with all of those factors. Teenagers and runaways engaging in sex work have shown to be particularly at risk.
It can’t be an easy life, but why do it?
The main reason seems to be money. People turn to prostitution as a form of survival, because they don’t have any other options. Some choose prostitution as an easy way to make large sums of money quickly. They intend to give it up as soon as they’ve accumulated enough money. Sexual curiosity is another reason many turn to prostitution, although prostitutes generally don’t want their children to follow in their footsteps. Another is drug dependence. Sexual abuse in childhood could be a motivator towards prostitution, but normally goes hand in hand with drug abuse.

Are these people really all that callous about what they do?
These days, prostitutes don’t stand on street corners to ply their trade. The internet is inundated with websites catering for all tastes in the sex-for-money business. The thing is, most of us won’t even know when we stand behind a sex worker in the cue at the post office. They are people like you and me.
So, what are their feelings, their fears, their hopes for the future? Do they want to continue their trade indefinitely, or are they, like a lot of us, treading water while they wait for their lives to change? Could an ex-sex worker become monogamous and be faithful to one partner? And if the money is all that good, what would they do instead?
Answers to these questions are as plentiful as there are people in the trade. Just like the rest of us, they had their own goals and plans.
